Don't label me a king
With Don’t Label Me King, I wanted to question the roles we inherit before we ever choose them.
The lion immediately evokes strength, authority, protection and leadership. It is one of the most familiar symbols in our collective imagination. Yet what interested me was not the animal itself, but the expectations attached to it.
As men, and often as fathers, we are given images to embody. We are expected to be strong, reliable, composed and certain. These models can be useful, but they can also become cages.
The fragmented lines that construct the figure simultaneously destabilize it. The image remains recognizable, while the role itself begins to loosen.
Part of my Social Animals series, this work explores the tension between responsibility and identity, between what is expected of us and who we actually are.
Don’t Label Me King is not a rejection of strength.
It is a reminder that no role should entirely define a person.
